Having successfully completed the AKAZI 1 breast cancer project in January 2023, ASRT has started implementing phase 2 of the project, AKAZI 2. In AKAZI 1, the project worked at systems level and community level and worked to  consolidate the existing knowledge and establish networks to advance the MoH efforts to control and manage breast cancer in Malawi.

The output of AKAZI 1 has been three folds: development of a comprehensive  health systems picture in Malawi with regards to breast cancer; development of the Clinical Breast Examination Manual which was launched by the Ministry of Health at the 2024 Cancer Symposium at BICC; Build capacity in Blantyre district health services and lay the foundation AKAZI 2. This effort was designed to reduce variability in care delivery, enhance access to care, improve patients outcomes and control health systems costs. Phase 2 of the project will work at three levels: Civic, Service and Community to map and develop a breast cancer care pathway in Malawi, contribute and support MoH in the  development of the National Cancer Guidelines among other things. It is hoped that these efforts will help to  promote best practice care for cancer patients especially those in rural areas and further improve patients outcomes, advance efforts to control breast cancer and maximize impact of the interventions on the lives and health of breast cancer patients.
